Biking Shoes
If you’re buying biking shoes, keep in mind that you need to do more than just find an attractive pair. Various aspects of the shoes have to be analyzed. By knowing what types of shoes are out there, you’ll have an idea of what to purchase.
Types of Cycling Shoes
These shoes can be classified in many ways, and manufacturers often do just that. For the most part however, they can be categorized into three main groups: recreational, road and mountain shoes. By determining which category you belong in, you should be able to make the right choice.
Recreational Cycling Shoes
If you’re just getting into biking, recreational or casual shoes is the ideal choice. You can ride the bike comfortably but also have no problems walking around. Three factors affect the purchasing decisions; price, closure system and volume.
The lacing used here is typical of ordinary shoes. But make sure you utilize the shoe strap and shield the laces. This will screen the laces from the chain ring.
In terms of appearance they look a lot like street shoes, but the sole is more naturally fitting. These cycling shoes also have a cover to conceal the cleat plates. If you want, you can keep the cover on and rely on the stiff sole for pedaling. If you’re going to add cleats, the sole plate will have to be taken off.
Mountain Biking Shoes
Their most conspicuous features are the sole cleats which resemble those used in football. This feature allows for superior traction especially on slippery surfaces. Note also that mountain shoes have less volume than recreational shoes.
They are also generally smaller. While it has its advantages, walking in them is harder. This is due to the stiff soles that are covered with plastic.
Road Cycling Shoes
These are even lighter than mountain shoes. The cleats are also different from those on mountain shoes. Those on road shoes are constructed of nylon or carbon fiber. Since the cleat is exposed, the shoe can be difficult to walk on.
Fitting and Costs
Remember that your purpose in getting these shoes is to optimize your performance on the bike. Make sure the fit is snug. Don’t settle for cheaper products because they won’t fit well. Even if they do there’s a good chance they won’t last long. Settling for small pairs will also hurt your feet.
Tips for Shoe Buyers
A lot of the high end cycling shoes are measured in European sizes. However, the salespeople should be able to determine the right fit. It’s also a good idea to purchase the pedals and shoes simultaneously as the needed cleats are with the pedals.
If you aren’t sure of what brand to buy, you can always check out online reviews or get recommendations from friends.
Again, use the shoes based on your needs and experience. Wearing mountain shoes if you aren’t ready for it will cause discomfort.
The types of biking shoes you use will affect not just how you walk but also how you pedal. For these reasons, you need to wear the right fitting shoes.
